Heaven between two slices of rustic country loaf

One of my favorite movies is Spanglish, most likely due to a scene where the sandwich above is intricately prepared as a late night snack by the man himself, Adam Sandler. The sandwich literally looked like a slice of heaven on-screen (with egg yolk cascading down from the split center), so I can only imagine making it for myself. I naturally Googled "Spanglish Sandwich" and of course, someone had beat me to the punch. The recipe is all over the web, in all its glory. There are all sorts of articles and a recipes for the sandwich, and even a video with Thomas Keller making the sandwich for Sandler ... and with good reason. It must be a damn good sandwich. Whether it's the world's greatest, I don't know... but it probably is.

From an interesting site called "Who Cooked That Up" I learned that "when James L. Brooks wrote the screenplay for his film "Spanglish" he included in the stage directions the notation that the hero of his film, a culinary genius, would make "a snack we will remember and copy." By the time the script got to the actor, Adam Sandler, the snack was expected to be something that "everyone in the audience would want to eat at home." And by the time it got to the professional chef who was the advisor on the film it was expected to be "the world's greatest sandwich."

"It fell to Thomas Keller, whose Napa Valley restaurant The French Laundry is a landmark in California cuisine, not only to create this amazing snack but also to train Adam Sandler, who had never cooked before, to make it so well on screen that his character would contemplate it and exclaim, "Oh -- Baby" even before taking a bite. This tall order was met so well that almost from the moment the film was released people began sharing the recipe."

So here's the recipe for the Spanglish Sandwich, which is essentially a toasted BLT with egg and cheese, but, don't panic at the looks of the ingredients.  If you don't need any artery-clogging or heart-stopping in your future, have no fear! You actually don't need a fraction of the fats and ingredients, and it's easy to cut down the bacon, mayo, and cheese. I think a Spanglish sandwich cook-off needs to happen, stat.
